This Week in Aspen History: Aerial Tram Consideration

“Aspen-S’mass link to be studied,” noted The Aspen Times on Jan. 22, 1987.

“In a rare showing of unanimity among local governments, elected officials in an informal vote on Tuesday agreed to join the Aspen Skiing Co. in an effort to study the feasibility of an aerial tramway linking Aspen and Snowmass. The Aspen Skiing Co. is paying $5,000, the same amount allocated by Snowmass Village. The Aspen City Council and Board of Pitkin County Commissioners in an informal vote approved a $10,000 expenditure by RFTA. In a meeting held Tuesday in Snowmass Village, the elected officials agreed the aerial tramway concept should be studied, and it’s possible a demonstration model linking the Snowmass Mall and the Snowmass Center area might be built as early as the summer of 1988.”
