At just three months old, Benji is already showing promise as Aspen Snowmass’ next avalanche rescue dog. Under the guidance of ski patroller Louise Zemlicka, originally from Sweden, he’s gaining confidence through daily outdoor adventures, socialization, and playful exercises that build his skills. Zemlicka, a seasoned animal trainer, joined ski patrol for the chance to combine her love of animals with meaningful mountain safety work.
Key Points
Benji, a golden retriever puppy, has begun training to become an avalanche dog for Snowmass Ski Area.
Trainer Louise Zemlicka previously trained police horses before joining the ski patrol team in Aspen.
Benji’s early training focuses on confidence-building, play-based search games, and noise desensitization.
He will attend Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment (C-RAD) training in Frisco before starting work on the slopes.
Once fully trained at around two years old, Benji will be ready to assist in life-saving mountain rescues—though the hope remains he’ll never need to. His journey reflects Aspen’s continued dedication to safety and the deep bond between humans and their canine partners on the mountain.
