Aspen Gives Green Light to the New Nell Bell Lift

Aspen Gives Green Light to the New Nell Bell Lift

Aspen City Council has unanimously approved a land use amendment that would allow Aspen Skiing Company to build the new Nell Bell lift. The high speed quad would replace the Little Nell and Bell Mountain chairlifts, dramatically decreasing ride time and improving reliability. The upgrade is designed to enhance mountain access and reduce weather related interruptions.

Key Points
• The Nell Bell lift would replace the aging Little Nell and Bell Mountain chairlifts dating back to 1986 and 1957.
• Travel time to the top of Bell Mountain would drop from 21 minutes to about eight minutes.
• SkiCo says the lower profile lift may operate during wind conditions that typically shut down the Silver Queen Gondola.
• The project awaits U.S. Forest Service NEPA review, with anticipated approval in early 2026 and implementation targeted for May 2026.

If approved, the Nell Bell lift will mark a significant investment in Aspen’s mountain experience and streamline access for future seasons. Locals and visitors alike can look forward to a faster, more resilient ride up the mountain.
